The Advanced Media Framework (AMF) is now available in Regata OS for AMD graphics cards and can be easily enabled via the Max-Q settings app. It is a technology that promises to improve the multimedia processing capabilities for Radeon GPUs, being applicable especially in content creation.
While AMF on Windows primarily makes use of DirectX, on Linux support for the technology is available through the Vulkan graphics API. It is also worth remembering that the library does not support HEVC on Linux, but only H264, at least for the FFmpeg implementation.
How to use AMD AMF in Regata OS
To start using AMD AMF on Regata OS, it is important that you have a Radeon graphics card (or AMD Vega APU and newer) supported by AMDGPU-PRO driver (also called Radeon Software for Linux). With that in mind, open the Max-Q app and in the Settings section enable the "Enable AMD AMF" option.
From there, the technology will be available for supported applications — which can be easily installed through the Regata OS Store — including OBS Studio, Shotcut, Kdenlive and SimpleScreenRecorder. Now, just configure the app to use the codec "h264_amf" (or AMD AMF H.264/AVC). In the case of Kdenlive, it may be necessary to perform a few additional settings so that the video editor can render correctly using the AMF library, which can be useful for better rendering times.
In addition to AMF support, another change that has recently arrived in Regata OS, which should also benefit Radeon graphics card owners, is better support for DaVinci Resolve with AMD hardware thanks to support for OpenCL (available through Regata OS Store), required to support Blackmagic Design's popular video editing and compositing software.
